Even in setbacks, a spirit of love invites God to work miracles.
We arrived at the center for “people of determination” (individuals presenting with some kind of disability limiting daily life function), excited to make new friends, share a Sabbath worship experience, and distribute the gifts they had prepared—only to be told that, due to missing a registration document, we would not be allowed entry.
“You can only leave the gifts in the reception area, but you cannot enter,” we were told.
Our Pathfinders in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, are dedicated to community service initiatives that have a direct, positive impact on humanity—regardless of culture, belief, social, or ethnic backgrounds. In spite of our disappointment, we did not give in to frustration, but maintained a kind and respectful attitude toward the authorities.
We prayed to God and thanked him for opening the door for us to share the gifts; we did not ask him to perform a miracle to be granted access. We understood the legalities and that there were no exceptions.
After loading the gifts into different cars, we put on our Pathfinder scarves and drove to the reception area to deliver the gifts, where, upon arrival, we were warmly received by the officers, who expressed their amazement at how cheerful the club members had remained, even after being told they were not allowed to meet or interact with those they had come to see.
We humbly expressed our gratitude for being allowed to share gifts and were delighted when the officers asked us if we would like to be taken around the building just to see the facilities. “Yes!” we exclaimed.
Lo and behold, God performed his miracle for the team. After being shown around, the officers agreed to let our group meet the people we had come to see, and we ended up spending an unforgettable Sabbath playing and singing with our new friends. On our way out, the authorities further surprised us by saying that we could visit any Sabbath and have sing-alongs, activities, and games with the people there.
The experience provided an unforgettable lesson—that we can trust God to do his work. Oftentimes challenges seem bigger and more difficult to overcome, especially when we approach them from our own human perspective. Regardless of whether we are Pathfinders, Master Guides, or even ministry leaders, we tend to take personal ownership of ministries and forget the owner of the ministry. Our Adventist Youth study materials continuously emphasize the importance of understanding the purpose or drive behind our actions. But it is God’s work, and he can do it.
Let us pray: God of the impossible, thank you for opening the way for us to serve you and your children. Please help us to stay grateful and to depend fully on you.
